Seven days of nature: 7

Nature walks get a bad press in a lot of fiction and autobiography. Adults remember the boredom of being dragged off to inspect things that hold no appeal whatsoever. Not so with Maja. She is fascinated by seed pods littering the path on the way to her other grandparents’ place. On Easter Sunday, she crouches down with a pile, some Djiadek gave her, some she found herself. She breaks them open to their opalescent creamy insides, with the black seeds nestled in their custom built hollows, and carefully lifts the seeds out and places them on the pavement. When it’s time to go inside for the goose, she picks them up and scatters them, pods and seeds, on the earth inside the garden fence.

Thank you so much Gilly, and initiator Ulli. This challenge has been fun, and given me a way to break up dense posts, and perceive things differently.

There could be some interesting plant relocations in time! Bless her, she may be a future horticulturist or some such. Louisa, my 8 year old has always been a collector of natures treasure and I’ve found her an eight inch long pine cone that she’ll love!

Reminds me of the time my great-niece Sophia captured and cradled a dandelion seed head in her hands, so gently, and looked on it with wonder. On the same walk she picked up a casuarina seed head and presented it to me as a special treasure I still keep. She would have been about four at the time. Children have an ability to see the beauty we adults often miss. They have so much to teach us.

Lovely. You can see the studied concentration even through her hat.
