Christmas trees

From the beginning of December we’re on the lookout for a Christmas tree. Word is they are sold everywhere on the streets. But they don’t appear. So J makes a cardboard one to begin decorating while we wait for the real thing. Finally, a man arrives in a van and sets up his selling station just across the road from the apartment. I watch from the window as the seller pokes the occasional tree through a funnel to wrap it in white netting, constraining it to thinness for a journey on the bus or in a car. Two days before Christmas he starts wearing a Santa hat. We have one small fall of snow that powders the trees white.

J comes back with a small tree perfectly shaped, and we begin transferring decorations: baubles, snowflakes, pompommed candysticks the kids made; little wooden figures; paper chains; J’s meticulously crafted boxes; and a string of lights. The twins inform us that their lights flash.

A few days before Christmas the woodsy perfume of the tree begins to permeate the house. The number of trees being sold dwindles.

I was hoping for twinlets caught in the act of decorating, Meg. Hope you got your share of Christmas hugs 🙂 🙂

    • They weren’t all that keen on decorating: maybe the home one got all the attention. I have got some great video of Maja and Dziadek making cardboard boxes – it’ll go in the Tenth Month post.

I’ll stick around 🙂 🙂 I did love the home made tree. Very inventive 🙂 Do you have your last 3 months mapped out? Any plans for travel? I know you have family coming soon.

        • Travel? What’s that? I’m reading an essay by Anne Patchett, and she reckons her best travel piece was called “Do not disturb” when she holed up in a room in a classy hotel. Today’s my first day out and about in a fortnight: holed up in my bedroom didn’t produce best pieces!

That said, we have a week in Zakopane mid-February, and maybe a few days in Kraków en route. I talked to my Australian granddaughter this morning and she’s thinking about extending her stay here and taking a gap year: she wants to go somewhere for a week or two, and I was getting mixed messages about on her own or with me. Iceland – Finland – Norway – Slovakia??? That’ll be bumping into going home time.

          You did ask!!!!

This is a nice size tree (I don’t have much space either) but I like J’s creation as well. I hope you’re having a joyous time my dear!

    • Such a different experience from the tree-getting at home when our kids were little. That was a car trip through the bush looking for the perfect one, wild cherry I think, but J’s asleep so I can’t check! There’ll probably be a corrigendum. Cardboard has become J’s default material, and the tiny living room table his default shed. He really misses making. Currently, he’s planning a town square.
